Drivers Michael Dixon and Sherry Harris maneuvered their school buses with precise precision through 12 challenging obstacle courses to take top honors in the 2013 Fayette County School Bus Road-E-O.
Dixon and Harris, who finished first and second, respectively, will represent Fayette in the Georgia State School Bus Road-E-O June 5-6 in Warner Robins. Dixon is an experienced state competitor having placed in the top 10 in 2009. This will be Harris’ first state competition.
Additional top driver awards went to Duane Lawson who placed third in the and to Don Askew who earned the Rookie Award.
It takes driver proficiency and accuracy to weave in and out of cones without touching them, and backing up and parallel parking within mere inches of a marker. These are not just skills of a great competitor, but also markers of a safe driver, and exactly the message the school system’s bus drivers wanted to bring to the community through the Road-E-O.
Ten drivers volunteered their personal time to practice and participate in the event. Between morning and afternoon routes, drivers were given five practice days to polish their skills before the big event.
