On April 4, Attorney General Sam Olens spoke to the Fayette County Bar Association about the 2nd Annual Legal Food Frenzy.

The Legal Food Frenzy is a canned food drive competition for law firms throughout the state. This competition is a joint effort by the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Georgia Food Bank Association.

The winning firm will receive the highly coveted “Attorney General’s Cup” from Georgia’s Attorney General Sam Olens. Awards will also be given in sole proprietor, small firm, medium firm, large firm, legal organization and corporate law firm divisions.

Any firm in the state can win, since the awards are based on a per person average (pounds raised divided by the number of employees in the firm). Firms began signing up to compete on March 5. The competition will be held between April 22 and May 3, 2013.

James Clifton at The Clifton Law Firm, LLC has been named as the competition’s representative for Fayette County.

Clifton will be recruiting firms in the city to compete to raise food and funds for the Real Life Center food bank in Tyrone and the Atlanta Community Food Bank during a 2-week competition in April.

“This is a friendly competition between law firms, corporate law offices, and legal organizations to help families who need food assistance in our region,” said Clifton. “Last year we had more than 200 firms in 50 cities competing statewide. We raised the equivalent of 612,000 pounds of food – this year we’ll raise even more.

The timing of this competition coincides with Law Day in Georgia. And the timing couldn’t be better according to Danah Craft, Executive Director of the Georgia Food Bank Association.

The seven regional food banks in Georgia experience an increase in demand during the summer months when children who depend on free/reduced lunch at school are out of school and eating out of their household pantries.

The food and funds raised in this competition will help the food banks go into the summer months strong and well-stocked with food for those families.
