A raccoon shot by a sheriff’s deputy in rural south Fayette County Sunday night was infected with rabies, according to tests conducted by state officials.

The raccoon at the time was at a location off Lone Oak Drive off Padgett Road a short distance south of Ga. Highway 85.

Fayette County Animal Control officials are investigating whether any unvaccinated outdoor pets in the area may have been infected by rabies as well.
