With all the financial issues going on with the Fayette County School System it might be easy to forget that a search for a permanent superintendent is underway. But the process for selecting a new superintendent is continuing and is on track to find a replacement for former Superintendent Jeff Bearden by July.
Interim Superintendent Dan Colwell Monday said 30 applicants applied and their information is currently being reviewed by the Ga. School Boards Association (GSBA).
School board members in the fall voted to have GSBA conduct the search process for a new superintendent. Colwell at the Feb. 11 school board meeting updated the community on the progress of the selection process.
Colwell said GSBA had received information supplied by the applicants and is currently reviewing the information submitted. The subsequent interview and selection process is expected to take place in time to have the new superintendent in place by July 1.
GSBA Executive Director Sis Henry previously said the 17-step process to hire a superintendent would result in a search that is open to everyone wishing to submit an application. Those applications will be reviewed in light of the qualifications deemed important by the school board and all applications will be presented to the board, Henry said.
The school system in the fall conducted an online community survey that included questions and comment areas.
Colwell was hired on an interim basis after the announcement in the fall of a mutual termination agreement between Bearden and the school board. Colwell’s term as interim superintendent runs from Jan. 1 through June 30.
