The idea of establishing new ball fields in Senoia is something that has been on the minds of city council members for more than a year. And the time to make their move came Feb. 4 when council members voted unanimously to purchase nearly 63 acres on Ga. Highway 16 as a future recreation facility.

The 62.8-acre property, located across Hwy. 16 from the Coweta Charter Academy, was part of a 268-acre site slated for development as a conservation subdivision. The purchase came with a price tag of $376,800.

Mayor Robert Belisle said the new recreational area is essentially a multi-phase city-county project, with Senoia providing the land and Coweta County responsible for developing the ball fields. Initial work on the project is expected within two years, Belisle said.

Provisions related to the sale include the city maintaining a 150-foot buffer on the property’s east side while the seller, Dockery Group, LLC, will provide a 50-foot-wide strip to serve as a emergency exit and cart path.

As for what might become of the ball fields on Howard Road once the new fields are open, Belisle said any future use is undetermined at this point.
