Coweta County’s only community-student orchestra, the Centre Strings orchestra, will present its winter concert on Dec. 18 at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Newnan.
The orchestra is being led by Dr. Lyn Schenbeck, said Coweta County School System spokesman Dean Jackson.
“Schenbeck has taught music on every level for over 40 years, including conducting orchestras and choirs all over the United States and Eastern Europe,” Jackson said. “She has conducted over 30 musicals and operas as well. Currently, Schenbeck is the Director of the Arts at the Central Educational Center, a charter college and career academy, where she teaches five classes and directs Internships in the Arts.”
Admission is free for the performance that will include music by Doris Gazda, Leopold Mozart, Johannes Brahms, Henry Purcell, Enrique Granados, Jerry Herman, Richard Rodgers, George Friderick Handel and Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Admission is free to the public.
Jackson said Centre Strings is Coweta County’s only community-student orchestra and holds no formal auditions.
“Centre Strings was built on the premise that music should not be competitive. Therefore, with the exception of the Concertmaster’s named Chair, none of the seats are auditioned. They are rotated throughout the season,” said Schenbeck. “I hope the public will come to hear the wonderful instrumental talent that we have in our community on Dec. 18. And if someone plays an orchestral instrument, I hope they would consider joining Centre strings in January for the spring semester. I am certain they will enjoy the warmth and camaraderie of Centre Strings, while maintaining high standards of musical excellence.”
The winter concert will be held in the Centre’s recital hall at 7 p.m.
Orchestra members include those who have played an orchestral string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or bass) for two years or more.
