Now that the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce has vacated the first floor of the historic county courthouse, a decision is pending on what to do with the space.
At a discussion today (Dec. 5) during its workshop meeting, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners are expected to give staff direction on the matter. Among the possibilities are leasing it to the Fayetteville Main Street Program, which has offered to manage leasing the third floor of the courthouse for special events much like it leases the city’s train depot.
Other options under discussion include the county’s extension service program, the county historical society and also a proposal to turn the first floor into an arts center.
One likely consideration will be as to which opportunity makes the most sense given the current second-floor occupant of the historic courthouse, which is the county development authority.
In other business, the commission will discuss appointing a representative to serve as the 2013 legislative liaison with the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia. The general assembly begins meeting in January, and the liaison will help keep commissioners and county management updated on legislation of importance to counties while also providing specific county information to ACCG to help legislators assess the impact of proposed legislation, according to a county memo.
The county’s current legislative coordinator is County Administrator Jack Krakeel, who will step down in January when the new commission appoints a new administrator.
