Get ready for a 9-month detour on Lower Fayetteville Road. The portion of the road near Fischer Road in east Coweta County will be closed beginning Nov. 26 so that crews can replace the bridge over Shoal Creek.

Construction crews will close the bridge on Lower Fayetteville Road over Shoal Creek beginning November 26.

The detour route will be Bob Smith Road to Stewart Road to Ga. Highway 54 to Fischer Road.

“This bridge will require much more significant work and the work will require the road to be closed there for approximately nine months,” said Coweta County Public Affairs Director Patricia Palmer. “The need for this replacement is great as this bridge serves a very busy road and it one of the lowest rated bridges in the county.”

The need to replace the bridge was noted in a 2010 report by Coweta County Engineering and Development Director Wayne Kennedy.

Referencing a number of bridges across the county that needed replacing, Kennedy said bridges scoring below 50-point sufficiency are considered to be in need of replacement. Citing a specific example from the list, Kennedy said the Shoal Creek bridge at Lower Fayetteville Road has a rating of 7 points.

Palmer said the replacement bridge will be about 100 feet longer than the current bridge and the grade of the new bridge will be raised about 3.5 feet.

The $1 million project is funded by the Georgia Dept. of Transportation.
