It has been 29 years since the first National Night Out (NNO) was held by law enforcement agencies across America. That tradition will continue again this year in Fayette County on Oct. 2, with family-oriented festivities coming to the Fayette Pavilion in Fayetteville and to Drake Field in Peachtree City.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in this year’s event on Oct. 2 with the cooperation of Target at the Fayette Pavilion in Fayetteville from 6-8 p.m., said sheriff’s spokesman Brent Rowan. Numerous public safety agencies have committed their assets for this event. They include Fayette County Fire/EMS, Fayette County Animal Control, Fayette County 911, Fayette County Marshall’s Office, Fayetteville Police Department and Fayetteville Fire/EMS, said Rowan.

Rowan said this year’s event will include fire department ladder trucks, helicopters, police vehicles, along with various other public safety equipment present for educational presentation and viewing.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will also be participating in the Peachtree City National Night Out held at Drake Field between 7-9 p.m.

NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Plus, the benefits the community will derive from NNO will extend well beyond one night, Rowan said.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnership; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
