A 14-year-old Fayette County boy remains in a youth detention facility after he was arrested last week for trying to steal a woman’s purse at gunpoint, and then shooting at her as she sped away in her vehicle, officials said.

The juvenile faces charges of aggravated assault and criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, according to Fayette County sheriff’s detectives. He was ordered to remain in a regional youth detention facility for the time being, The Citizen confirmed.

The incident occurred Saturday, May 19 in the Carnegie Place shopping area on Ga. Highway 85 north near Ga. Highway 279, officials said. The victim was checking her mail when the suspect approached the rear of the car and then pointed a handgun at her, demanding for her to surrender her purse, officials said.

The victim refused to do so and sped away, at which point the juvenile discharged the gun, detectives said. No one was hurt in the incident.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect based on statements given by the victim and other witnesses, officials said. The suspect was arrested Thursday, officials said.
