The First Christian Church of Tyrone recently broke new ground by adding a more contemporary style of worship to its Sunday morning traditional format.

Pastor Dan Roberts said, “While we will always have a traditional Sunday service, we decided to add a contemporary style because we know that it appeals to many younger families.”

Both services begin at 10:30 a.m.

First Christian is a 111-year-old church that has been at its current location since 1994. It is a congregational church which means that it is locally led, and not part of a supervisory hierarchy or denomination. The focus is the preeminence of Jesus Christ as Lord.

Roberts pointed out that most of the normal features of the traditional worship service remain in place but they are presented in “a more laid back style.” Also, the music is different. Instead of a standard choir, the service is largely a guitar-led program with a “praise team.”

“Jay Warren, the lead worship guy plays about 15 different instruments,” said Roberts. “So, you never know what you are going to get. Along with the guitar, we have a keyboard, drums, and a mandolin; I am promised a banjo.”

The contemporary service is conducted in the church’s activities building which is similar to the main sanctuary, but on a smaller scale.

“It’s close to the kitchen,” said Roberts, “where coffee is always on hand.”

Roberts has been an ordained minister for 28 years and has previously served in churches in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and North Carolina.

In 1995, he founded LOGIC Ministries to evangelize in Haiti and Mexico.

He still serves as president of the ministry.
