Louise Ellington Agnew of Fayetteville, retired teacher with the Fulton County School System, died Dec. 4, 2011.
She was born June 1, 1916 in Atlanta, the third daughter of Marie Lamkin and Carl Henry Ellington. After graduating from Girls High School, Louise worked in the Atlanta office of 20th Century Fox.
During this time she participated in a community play taking the role of a character named “Jerry” which became her lifelong nickname for family and many friends including William J. Agnew, Jr. who was also in the cast. They married April 20, 1941. When Bill joined the U. S. Navy Seabees soon after Pearl Harbor, she followed him to San Diego until he left for the Pacific. She later attended Georgia State College (now University), earning bachelors and masters of Education degrees.
For many years she taught history at Hapeville and Briarwood High Schools. In retirement she volunteered for Meals on Wheel in Fayette County and taught a Bible study at Christian City. Louise was a member of Stewart Avenue United Methodist Church in Atlanta for 82 years and a teacher of the R. M. Holland Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill and sisters Buford Ellington Brower and Irene Ellington Glass. She is survived by daughters Jeffre Ray (David) of Fayetteville and Lea Agnew of Fayetteville, and sons William J. Agnew III (Carmen) of Atlanta and John Agnew of Dunedin, Fla.; grandsons David Ray of Suffolk, Va.; William Ray of Winter Garden, Fla.; Jonathan Ray (Amanda) of Dunwoody; great grandchildren Alicia Ray, Aidan Ray, Jackson Ray and Cameryn Ray; nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8 at Mowell & Son Funeral Home in Fayetteville, with burial following at 3 p.m. at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
