Peachtree City police are hoping to scare drunk drivers straight with a Halloween DUI crackdown this weekend.

The police department is joining with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office to put more than 30 lawmen on the streets to crackdown on drunk drivers in Peachtree City.

In addition to handing out tickets at each sobriety checkpoint, officers will also be handing out goodie bags for kids with educational material, coupons and candy.

The DUI checkpoints are being planned for “locations that typically have a high concentration of DUI drivers,” said Sgt. Brad Williams, supervisor of the department’s Community Response Team.

National statistics show that more than half of all fatal crashes during the Halloween holiday are alcohol-related.

In addition to the DUI crackdown, Peachtree City police also have a few safety reminders for trick-or-treaters:

• Children should remain in well-lighted areas and never be out alone;

• Trick-or-treaters should wear reflective clothing and watch for cars; and

• Have a parent check each child’s treats.
