Bethany United Methodist Church will offer its famous Perlieu Stew Saturday, Oct. 29 from noon until 5 p.m. or until the stew is sold out. Plates are $8 for adults and $5 for children. Pints of stew are $6 and quarts are $10.

The recipe for the stew goes back into the history of the church — about 1908 — when the men went hunting every fall and brought back their “catch of the day.” They put the rabbit and game together with some potatoes and onions, cooked it down and had a feast. A few years later, the ladies decided to get in on the act and sell the “stew” to make money for the church. The amount grew until it took several iron pots to cook the stew and now the wild game has been replaced with chicken, but the tradition has continued. Today’s “plate” consists of pickle chips, potato chips, bread and homemade cake and coffee. Every year continues to be a sell-out with the money going to “the Lord’s work.”

Bethany is at 607 Rivers Rd. Fayetteville (where Rivers and Milam meet at Lee’s Lake Road in north Fayette County).
