The Kedron pools are closed for the time being as construction begins on the new support system for the new bubble exterior, city officials said.

But the swim season is still on for a little while longer, as the city is keeping its Glenloch outdoor pool open through Oct. 30.

The Glenloch pool hours will be Mondays through Thursdays from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays from 7:45 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 1-6 p.m. and Sundays from 1-5 p.m.

Peachtree City officials have set aside $454,000 to replace the bubble and the underground system that anchors the exterior, which allows the Kedron pools to be used year-round. Also included in that figure is a new air-exchange system, which is crucial for keeping the exterior pressurized.

Although the economy is tough again this year, the City Council pulled the trigger on the project after learning that the existing bubble was in such bad shape that it might collapse if used again for one more year.

The money is coming from a $3 million bond issuance authorized by the City Council. The funds from that bond issue will also pay for a number of infrastructure repairs including at several local city-owned tennis courts, repairs at ballfield restrooms and replacement of the surface at the All Children’s Playground.

Another project includes $100,000 for repairs to the cast house at the city’s amphitheater. Also on the plan is $500,000 to expand the parking lot at the city’s Baseball and Soccer Complex to its full capacity.

The upshot of the struggling economy is that the bonds allow the city to take advantage of extremely low interest rates, allowing the city to expand its original $2.1 million budget to $3 million, city officials said.

In previous years the city has used a lease purchase program to secure financing for infrastructure improvements, but the city has reached the limits of the program, which requires the pledging of “essential government facilities.”
