Qualifying is over and up next for voters in Senoia and Palmetto is choosing who will represent them for the next four years. Voters in Senoia’s contested races will decide on two City Council seats while those in Palmetto will decide on candidates for mayor and two council seats. The qualifying period resulted in no contested races in Sharpsburg.
Senoia voters in November will decide on two council positions.
Qualifiers include incumbents Maurice Grover and Bobby Graham and three challengers that include retired Col. Don Rehman, IBM technical support staff Harry Ramos and business owner Todd Baggarly.
Voting in Senoia is at-large with the top two vote-getters winning the seats.
It turns out that in Sharpsburg there will be no need for an election. That is because Mayor Wendell Staley was the only person to qualify for that position. And as for the two council seats up for re-election, Councilwoman Celene Davenport was the only person to qualify for the Post 3 seat and former Mayor and Councilman Derrick McElwaney was the only person to qualify for the Post 1 seat. Incumbent Connie Turner in Post 1 did not qualify.
And in Palmetto, voters will have several candidates to choose from for mayor and three council seats.
The race for mayor will be contested in November with Mayor John Miller going up against former Mayor Clark Boddie.
Like Senoia, Palmetto’s council seats are at-large, with the top vote-getters winning the seats. And in Palmetto’s case there will be five candidates vying for the three City Council seats.
Qualifying were incumbents Lorraine Allen and Leon Sumlin. Challengers included senior center director Patty O’Hara Willey, Chattahoochee Hills public works director and former Palmetto Councilman Larry Parrott and business owner Robert C. Petty, Jr. Incumbent Natalie McFadden had not qualified by press time.
