A family in south Fayette County suffered a near total loss of their home June 24 after lightning that accompanied severe storms struck the Whitewater Creek subdivision house.
Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson Donnie Davis said the homeowner at 145 Islesworth Way was at the residence when lightning struck the house.
The homeowner heard a loud lightning strike but did not know it was his own home until minutes later when he was investigating the sound of hail striking his home which turned out to be the fire in his attic space, Davis said.
Davis said upon their arrival firefighters found the attic area of the home fully involved with heavy fire and smoke.
“Not only did the fire crews contend with the heavy fire and smoke but also with the severe storms that hit the Fayette County area during this time, making conditions even more dangerous to fire crews,” Davis said.
Davis said fire crews were at the scene for approximately two hours, subsequently determining that the home was a near total loss.
There were no injuries in the incident.
The Fayetteville Fire Dept. assisted on the fire call.
Davis reminded citizens of the importance of a working smoke detector with back-up batteries.
