The annual Homecoming service at Senoia United Methodist Church will be this Sunday, May 15, at 11 a.m. The traditional Homecoming dinner-on-the-grounds will follow the service.

“This year we are very pleased to have former pastor and our new district superintendent, the Rev. Carol Grubbs Cook, and her husband Scott, joining us for worship,” a homecoming committee member said. “Our guest preacher for our worship time is our resident bishop, the Rev. Mike Watson. His wife, Margaret, will join him.”

Homecoming at Senoia UMC is usually observed on the first Sunday in May each year. The date was changed to accommodate Watson’s schedule.

“Homecoming celebration is a time of worship and fellowship that was started by our JOY Sunday School class (Jesus first, Others second, and You last), organized in 1947, and its teacher for many years was Mr. Charles ‘Charlie’ Arnall,” the committee member said. “Our entire congregation has embraced this special activity in the life of our church, and we are looking forward to the presence of our extended church family as we celebrate together.”

Children’s Sunday School begins with an assembly in the sanctuary at 9:45 a.m. under the leadership of Mrs. Judy Belisle. In consideration of the

Homecoming activities, the adult classes will forego meeting to set up the dinner.

Announcements begin in the sanctuary at 10:55 a.m., followed by morning worship.

The church was the first one built in Senoia, although not on its present site, founded in 1861 by the Rev. Francis Warren Baggarly. The first structure built on the present site was constructed in 1871 but was moved for construction of the present building in 1898. The church is distinguished by its “Queen Anne” architecture, said to be the best example of Queen Anne architecture in the state of Georgia. Additions and modifications were made in 1920, 1948 and 1979. The present pastor is the Rev. Nathanial Long.

The church is on the corner of Bridge and Seavy streets (229 Bridge St.) in Senoia.
