It will not be long now for work on the new Kohl’s department store at Fischer Crossings to get underway. The initial activity on the site across from the Sam’s Club on Fischer Road and Ga. Highway 34 in east Coweta County is expected to begin on May 1.

Fischer Crossings developer Scott Seymour on April 13 said the project will begin moving dirt on May 1, with initial construction activities expected to begin in mid-June or July. The store is expected to open next spring, Seymour said.

The 64,000 square-foot Kohl’s will be located in Pod B of the larger Fischer Crossings development. Pod B is located on the northeast corner of Hwy. 34 and Fischer Road. In terms of size and by way of comparison, the Kohl’s at the Fayette Pavilion is 86,000 square feet.

Coming in at a total of approximately 225,000 square feet, Pod B will also be the location of a number of other retailers that will be housed in four or five “junior boxes” near Kohl’s and eight outparcel buildings along the immediate northeast corner of Hwy. 34 and Fischer Road.

As for who those retailers might be, Seymour would only say that he is negotiating with a number of national retailers, including some of those that had previously shown an interest in locating in Peachtree City.

“Everybody has been sitting on the sidelines waiting for Kohl’s,” Seymour said. “Now that Kohl’s is finalized the wait is over.”

Pod B at build-out is expected to employ 310 people with wages totaling $6.75 million, according to a 2010 economic impact study by the University of West Georgia.

The portion of the Fischer Crossings development where Kohl’s and other retailers will be located received final approval earlier this month from the Coweta County Commission. That approval came after several sticking points were ironed out between developer Scott Seymour and the Featherston Fishing Club, owners of the Wynn’s Pond residential area situated to the east of the Fischer Crossings development and adjacent to Line Creek and Fayette County.
