Twenty year-old Fayetteville resident Michael Summers was killed early Saturday morning in a one-car accident on Inman Road.

Maj. Bryan Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said preliminary indications are that Summers’ death occurred

after he was ejected from the vehicle.

Woodie said the accident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday on Inman Road near the intersection with South Jeff Davis Drive.

Woodie said Summers, who was alone in the vehicle, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck southbound on Inman Road and, for reasons not yet known, left the roadway on the southbound (right) side. Summers attempted to steer his vehicle back on to the roadway but over-corrected, Woodie said, adding that the pickup truck skidded across Inman Road before leaving the roadway on the northbound side.

After leaving the roadway for the second time, Summers’ vehicle overturned before coming to rest against a tree. Following the collision with the tree Summers’ vehicle caught fire, Woodie said.

Summers, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from his vehicle, suffering fatal injuries and died at the scene of the crash. Excessive speed was a significant factor in this crash, said Woodie.

Woodie said four residents who were nearby heard the crash and went to the scene. They found Summers pinned under the vehicle and were attempting to lift the vehicle off him when the truck burst into flames, Woodie said.

Woodie said it is likely that Summers’ death was caused by the impact and that the fire did not contribute to his death.
