Gateway bridge, Parkway-Crosstown fix on PTC agenda

At its meeting Thursday night, the Peachtree City Council is expected to make a decision on the future of improvements to the intersection of Peachtree Parkway and Crosstown Road.

The possibilities range from adding turn lanes to a roundabout or even perhaps a traffic light, though council has resisted the latter based on constituent requests.

Since the city lacks funding for the project, it is petitioning for the funds to come from Fayette County’s 2003 transportation sales tax. The project was discussed at a recent commission meeting, but there wasn’t much support for an intensive fix since the intersection isn’t backed up very far during peak drive time.

Council needs to pick its preferred solution so the county can formally consider the funding request.

Council is also expected to formally vote on a request to the county to provide $1.5 million to build a cart path bridge over Ga. Highway 54 West that would link the path along MacDuff Parkway to the Shoppes at the Village Piazza shopping center on the other side of the highway.

The bridge would also serve as a “gateway” architectural feature for those entering and exiting the city, officials have said. The city recently was notified that because it had failed to spend the funds, it has lost a $518,000 grant for the project.

Although Commissioner Steve Brown has voiced strong support for the project, the remaining four commissioners didn’t express much interest when it was presented to the commission earlier this month.

Also up for council consideration Thursday night is a request to increase the city’s economic development budget by $75,000.

Council also will consider seeking proposals for a new bubble to encapsulate the Kedron pools so they can be used year round. The purchase, estimated at $250,000, would come from the city’s reserve fund with anticipation for financing at a later date if it becomes feasible to do so.
