Hwy. 74-Paschall cart path tunnel now open

The cart path tunnel underneath Ga. Highway 74 at Paschall Road is now officially open.

The tunnel structure itself has been finished since the widening of Hwy. 74 from two to six lanes was completed last year. But the city had to go in behind the project to attach the cart path approaches on both sides of the tunnel.

This turned out to be a more lengthy effort than originally anticipated because of right of way issues involving not just the tunnel but the stretch of path that goes northward from the tunnel toward The Avenue shopping center.

The most complex and time-consuming right of way acquisition was for a portion of land needed in front of the Peachtree City post office, as postal officials had to sign off on the project.

The path connection on the western side of the tunnel spirals in a curve with a large radius to keep the grade of the incline manageable.
