I want to take a moment to thank the Fayette County deputy who blasted through the RED light at Ga. Highway 92 and Rivers Road around 8:40 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 15) and did not take the time to use sirens to warn us of his approach as we crossed 92 during a GREEN light. I guess you thought the lights that you turned on as you reached the intersection before your left turn onto Rivers Road were enough of a warning. I am pretty sure the key is to turn the lights on BEFORE you get to the intersection with a RED light, but what do I know? I am just the private citizen who pays your salary. You almost hit us, but now I don’t have to go out and by a new pair of brown pants, so I guess thanks on some level are in order.

There wasn’t a cop at the Highway 54-West Fayetteville Bypass Monday, Aug. 23, at 7:30 a.m. I brought my kids to school this morning and to my amazement after the death of a woman and a silent protest about the intersection, there was no officer. No one at all directing traffic. This is really a kick in the face from our local officials saying they really don’t care. I myself would love to know who is responsible for the opening of the road. If he is an elected official, I will make sure to point out to voters that the person responsible for a needless death didn’t care enough to make sure that the intersection was safe, before the death and after the death.

A lot of over-sensitive folks in PTC are opposed to gas golf carts because they say they’re noisy and smelly and want them outlawed in favor of electric carts only. Makes you wonder if the color yellow makes them sad too. Do you think these same people will be just as quick to require everyone to have electric lawnmowers and electric automobiles? If you are so worried about emissions from gas golf carts, when are you banning gas weed eaters, gas edgers, and most of all automobiles, schoolbuses. What about Falcon Field airplanes? Guess the power company is behind this or some of their employees? Let’s think about all the trees you have in Peachtree City that suck up all the pollutants. If golf carts are too noisy, put in ear plugs (motorcycles make more noise, ban them); if the smell in the tunnels bother you, don’t go in them. Does Al Gore now live in Peachtree City or do you have someone living there that believes his money-making scam of global warming?

The mission of the Fayette County School System is to deliver effective instruction and set high expectations resulting in continued improvement in student achievement, as listed on the eboard site. If this is supposed to guide instructional decisions made by schools, then WHO thought it was a good idea to take the technology/computer specialist out of Sara Harp Minter? This is such a disservice to the students.

My property taxes have steadily skyrocketed in the past five years. I am a 27-year resident of Fayetteville; I’ve seen a great many changes in that time. But, the changes made in the last five years have been to the detriment of our Sleepy Little Town. For instance, the sidewalk construction now in progress. This I presume if for the riff-raff that has moved into our town, so they may stroll the streets. Because, what else do they have to do? They don’t work and contribute to the tax base. They just keep taking and never giving in return.

What is going on in Peachtree City? Neighborhoods that were pristine when we moved here 10 years ago look like dumps now, with overgrown yards and houses in need of maintenance. Are the HOAs afraid of enforcing the rules on upkeep for fear they might hurt someone’s feelings? Or do people just not care anymore? Is the city so understaffed that Code Enforcement can’t do its job? It doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots and know that once homes aren’t maintained, it starts to spread, and property values start to slide. Property values decrease, and people who value a high standard of living with good schools and a safe environment leave. When that happens, standards get lower, and people move in that will accept sub-par schools, a lower standard of living, and increased crime. Before you know it, the entire community has changed, and every reason that people came here is gone, and can never be reclaimed. It will be gone. If you don’t like rules and standards, please go somewhere else. If you don’t want to maintain your home’s appearance, go somewhere else. If you don’t value our standard of living with good schools and safety, please go somewhere else. HOAs, please enforce the rules on maintenance and upkeep so that our property values increase. Peachtree City, please start taking some pride in your property, your neighborhoods, and your city again.

I would like also to thank the two neighbors that have tried to keep our island here on Lanyard Bend in Fishers Bank subdivision cut. We have tried many times to get in touch with the city Public Works Department re the high grass and trees and weeds growing up through the middle of the giant pampus grass plants. Also the cedar plants have grass now growing in them and probably will destroy these plants. Grass is growing out onto the street. Both sides have been cut this week thanks to these caring neighbors. Wonder why we have an ordinance here in PTC re keeping your yards cut and maintained? Why doesn’t our city adhere to the ordinance? No excuse for city getting run down and our subdivision entrances and islands are being maintained by our citizens. Don’t our taxes cover this sort of service?

Elementary school cafeteria workers need to give the kids a break. Children should not dread lunch because “mean old ladies” are the monitors. If you don’t want to be around jovial kids, find a new job. Let the kids enjoy their lunch, Braelinn monitors, especially.

To the tattoo parlor: I deleted you from my daughters’ Facebook “friend request” and also blocked you from “friending” her again. Why in the world are you sending “friend requests” on teenagers’ Facebook pages whom you do not know? Are you trying to promote your business via Facebook and putting the idea into our kids’ heads to come to your store to get tattoos? I monitor my kids’ Facebook pages and I check their accounts on a regular basis, something I think all parents should be doing. Please stop trying to “friend” our kids on Facebook. When our kids are of legal age to make this choice for themselves of getting a permanent tattoo on their skin, then they are free to do so. Until then, hands off!

To all of you parents picking up your children from the various elementary schools around town. Don’t be like the demonstrated lack of either common sense or courtesy (or both) observed by motorists going eastbound on Crosstown Road on the first day of Oak Grove Elementary school. Crosstown Road is not a waiting lane or a parking lot. Get as far over to the right of the road as possible, and if you can’t do that, keep driving. Don’t block the road. There are drivers behind you who need to get by.

Teachers, coaches, administrators, band directors, youth ministers and everyone else who willingly accepts a position with influence over our children: nothing is as heartbreaking as seeing a particular skill or desire in your child and watching it get destroyed by the people to whom you entrust your child for guidance and inspiration. If you can’t nurture that spark in the children and teens under your care, please at least don’t destroy it! No, you don’t get paid enough and, yes, you should have more support and better working conditions. ALL professions struggle with adversity. Please don’t take your issues out on our children.

Re the new Braelinn Shopping look: The large Kmart sign looks so out of sync with the other signs. The red color is awful against the nice brick red of the building. I know that is the Kmart color; however, wouldn’t black have been better? This color looks like someone didn’t know how to match their colors. Not very tasteful. Everyone has said something about the horrible contrast.

Come on, parents, wake up and take charge of your children. First you were leaving your kids at the PTC pools and expecting the lifeguards to baby-sit. Now you are leaving them at the library. Not very appropriate parenting, people. Also, there should be a sign that says, “No Food in Library.” If there is already, can’t you read the sign or do you think it does not mean you?
