It is an annual fundraising event to benefit The Joseph Sams School in Fayetteville. Always a unique, family-focused event, the 6th Annual Race for Riley is looking for runners, walkers and cyclists to participate in one of south metro Atlanta’s largest fundraising efforts.

Event founder Waynette Peek, mother of eight year-old Riley, for whom the event is named, holds the annual 5K Walk-Run, 1 Mile Run and Tot Trot each year on the idyllic grounds at Georgia Baptist Children’s Home in Palmetto. New to the event this year is a 10/30/62m Bike Ride through the rolling landscape of Chattahoochee Hills.

Initially a fundraiser for the Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, the Chattahoochee Hills residents in 2006 decided to designate the proceeds to Riley’s school,

The Joseph Sams School in Fayetteville. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the school.

For Riley’s parents,Rodney and Waynette, the goal of the annual event is simple.

“Our goal is to improve the lives of the children that attend the school,” Waynette said. “From the first day that Riley walked into the her classroom, her quality of life and our peace of mind improved because we had found a safe, loving learning environment for our daughter. Having a place like JSS is a blessing that cannot be adequately described.”

Waynette said cyclists can choose from 3 ride distances: a 10 mile beginner ride, or a more advanced (by distance only) 30 or 62 mile ride. Registration fee includes T-shirt, SAG support wagon, cue sheet, rest stops, and “the feeling of accomplishment in giving to a great cause.”

The Bike Ride is sponsored by Trek of Peachtree City. For more ride information please contact [email protected].

Other events this year will include:
• Food, fun and activities for kids of all ages.
• Awards in the 5K run to overall male & female, overall male & female master, and top 3 in 14 age groups (male and female) – 10 and under to 70 and over in 5-year increments.
• Ribbons to all finishers in the 1 Mile & Tot Trot
• Meet DJ Michael Stuart
• Original short-sleeved Race for Riley race shirt guaranteed to all pre-registered entrants.
• Chick-fil-A breakfast (upon purchase)
• Enjoy bar-b-que on race day

The Race for Riley is far more than a walk/run and cycling event. It is a family event that attracts thousands each year. It also includes a complete range of family attractions, a live auction and barbecue lunch.

Thanks to the efforts of Waynette Peek, it is a one-of-a-kind fundraising event in southwest metro Atlanta.
