A team of 15 East Coweta High School students participated in the Science Olympiad Regional Tournament held Saturday, Feb. 27 at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta.
The school’s team competed in all 23 events at the tournament and placed in the top 10 in three events. Five science teachers served as coaches for this year’s Science Olympiad program, which was directed by Martha Milam.
Students remarked that their Science Olympiad experience was “a lot of work but a lot of fun,” “challenging to the mind,” “an opportunity to bring learning to fruition,” and “a great learning experience.” Several commented on the benefits of working in teams to address problems. Participants enjoyed the opportunity for in-depth study of subjects of particular interest that they may want to pursue in college. Team members heartily recommended the Science Olympiad experience to anyone interested in a career in science or engineering.
The Science Olympiad is a national organization dedicated to improving science education K-12 and encouraging more students to pursue careers in science, technology, and science teaching. Now in its 26th year, Science Olympiad is one of the premiere science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to more than 5,700 teams in 48 states. With more than 300 Georgia schools participating in the Science Olympiad programs, Georgia’s program is the 8th largest in the country.
Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events. Events combine the disciplines of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering, and technology to encourage a wide cross-section of students to get involved in problem-solving and hands-on group projects.
