A 16-year-old girl died Oct. 8 after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Hood Avenue in Fayetteville.

Marcia Annette Demarcus, 42, of Fayetteville, was charged with DUI drugs, vehicular homicide, reckless conduct, two counts of failure to render aid and leaving the scene of an accident, according to Fayette County Jail records.

Fayetteville Police Department spokesman Mike Whitlow said the incident occurred at approximately 9:35 a.m. along Hood Avenue across the street from Fayetteville Elementary School. An elderly woman and the 16-year-old female were walking along Hood Avenue and had apparently been handing out pamphlets for a church when the incident happened, said Whitlow.

A 42-year-old female driving a Mazda pick-up truck veered off the roadway and initially side-swiped the older woman and hit the teenaged straight-on, Whitlow said.

The teenage girl was identified as Caelyn Olds, according to a post on the youcaring.com website.

“Our dear friends Nick (pastor at Middle Fayette Church of Christ) and Casie Adams have experienced a painful tragedy that no parent should ever have to go through. On Saturday, Oct. 8, their daughter Caelyn was killed by a driver under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The family will have numerous expenses, including burial, funeral and court costs. Please consider helping this family by relieving any financial burden that may arise,” the yourcaring.com post said.

Whitlow said the driver of the vehicle left the scene and was subsequently located by Fayette County sheriff’s deputies and taken into custody.

The teenage girl was transported to Piedmont Fayette Hospital where she died from the injuries she sustained, said Whitlow.

The older woman who was also struck by the vehicle was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
