The Peachtree City Police Department is asking residents to raid their medicine cabinets for outdated or unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medicine to be turned in at a special event Saturday.

Police officers taking part in the Operation Take Back program will be at the Gathering Place off McIntosh Trail from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday accepting the drugs for permanent disposal. The service is free and anonymous as no questions will be asked.

The goal of the program is to safely dispose of medications while also keeping them out of the hands of persons who can abuse them or potentially sell them.

The department cannot accept items such as needles, sharps, inhalers, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, medical equipment or hydrogen peroxide.

The police department also offers a similar program every day at the police headquarters from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m .to 5 p.m. where residents can drop off used or unwanted prescriptions. A secure receptacle is located in the lobby where the medications can be deposited.
