A firefighter received minor injuries Monday night while battling a house fire near New Hope Road, but the occupants of the home managed to escape without injury before fire crews arrived, officials said.

The home at 260 Brandon Mill Circle was significantly damaged and the cause of the fire is under investigation, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

The blaze was reported at 6:40 p.m. and the first unit, from the city of Fayetteville, was on the scene at 6:45 p.m., followed three minutes later by the first county unit, Nelms said.

When the first unit arrived and the smoke was seen, a second alarm was struck to summon more firefighters. It took just a little more than an hour to get the fire under control as the firefighters also had to battle “extremely high winds,” Nelms said.

The reason for the city unit beating the county to the scene is that the county fire department was dealing with a chimney fire in another location in addition to several medical calls that occurred simultaneously, Nelms said.
