A resident’s suggestion to allow fences higher than four feet in front yards will be discussed by the Peachtree City Council Thursday night.

Council is not expected to vote on the suggestion. Rather, city planning staff are asking council to see if it is a direction they would be willing to explore.

Currently the city limits front yard fences, and those along a street, to be no higher than four feet above ground level.

Council will discuss the matter at its meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

In a letter to council, Smokerise resident David Cree said the limit is not enough to discourage a burglar from committing a crime. He is asking the maximum to be increased to at least six feet.

Cree noted that in his neighborhood there have been two burglaries in the past six months, including one four doors down from his home.

“Peachtree City is just not the same almost crime-free city it was when I moved here in 1974,” Cree wrote.

Cree is also asking for the setbacks to be changed so the fences can be built at the property line “so that no one can enter or drive down our driveways to burglarize or vandalize our homes.”
