Economy, lack of funds shuts Fayette arts facility

Due to the downturn of the economy and inability to obtain adequate funding, a decision was reached that we must close our doors as of May 1, 2008.

The Fayette Art Center entity will remain and will continue to carry out its mission of bringing people together through art, but not in one central site. Please continue to check our website at www.fayetteartcenter.com to see where teachers are continuing their classes.

Continuing classes include photography, the Photography Club, sculpture, and painting. Please note Summer Art Camp will not be available. We hope to be able to offer 1-hour youth art classes this summer during the first two weeks of June and the month of July, if not more. There are several adult classes continuing.

Basically we need sponsorship totaling $54,000 a year to operate educational art curriculums properly. We also need a donated site: (approx. 2,000 square feet), empty commercial space, empty industrial space, old church/barn with plumbing, etc.

Art centers in surrounding counties are either paid for with SPLOST funding, underwritten by their county government, built and operated by their city government or built and operated with board of education funds, or any combination of the aforementioned.

If you have any leads on a potential site for us, please contact us at [email protected].

Thank each and every one of you who have contributed thus far and a special thanks to all the volunteers. We aren’t going away, just regrouping.

Regarding the PTC Council meeting, I was led to believe it was better to ask for equipment and supplies than a service agreement – the same as other schools since we are predominantly an educational facility.

I had originally written a service agreement and changed it based on this information. It should also be noted PTC Council changed the wording in their policy after I had submitted my request.

The amount asked for was minimal and still would have not affected the decision to close the site at 2011 W. Hwy 54.
