It’s time for educators to fold their ‘hold it’ policy.
Last week, it was revealed that Fayette County High School has adopted a new bathroom policy for its 1,300 students.
Because of a single gang-related fight in a school bathroom, the school’s administration has adopted a lock-down policy on the school’s bathrooms during class periods.
If students need to go to the restroom, they have to head to the front office and wait to use a single visitors’ restroom.
To isolate one bathroom for more than 1,300 students seems like something out of a Vincent Price horror movie, but the administration maintains it’s meant to protect the students.
While school security should remain a priority, there’s a far better method than this draconian policy.
In the old days, hall monitors roamed the halls and bathrooms to maintain discipline and security.
Perhaps the administrators should take a page from the past and implement such a system, and in the words of Moses, “Let my people go.”
