Local Cub Scout Pack 172 and Boy Scout Troop 172 recently relived a part of history when they participated in the overnight camping program Oct. 20-22 aboard the World War II Aircraft Carrier USS Yorktown located on Charleston Harbor. The overnight campers became shipmates with other youngsters as they all toured the USS Yorktown, World War II Submarine Clamagore, World War II Destroyer Laffey and World War II Coast Guard Cutter Ingham.

For the full effect of living aboard a famous World War II ship, the morning and evening meals were prepared and served to the overnight campers in the “Chief’s Mess” aboard the USS Yorktown. Pack 172 and Troop 172 also enjoyed a boat ride to Fort Sumter - where the Civil War began.

Cub Scout Pack 172 is sponsored by New Hope Baptist Church in Fayetteville. Pack 172 was chartered in October 1996 and currently has 20 Cub Scout leaders. The pack, today, includes 60 plus boys in first through fifth grades. For more information visit the Web site at www.bsa-172.org. All Cub Scouts generally meet with their dens on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 until 8 p.m. The Boy Scout Troop meets on Sundays from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
