You’ve probably heard about the aerobic and strength training workout just for women that’s taken the exercise world by storm- Curves International. Curves provides women a place to work out in a community of women who are seeking the same thing- good health.

What you probably don’t know is that, unlike other exercise and weight management programs, Curves is always finding ways to give back to the community. Recently one of those ways was the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides Walk held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on May 20. Curves of Fayetteville joined Team Haley to walk a 5K for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Team Haley is named for six year old Haley Carr, a happy, precious imp, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth. CF, a genetic disease, occurs when someone is born with two copies of the CF gene – one from each parent. CF causes the body to produce an abnormally, thick, sticky mucus, which clogs the airways and leads to life-threatening lung infections. The thick mucus also obstructs the pancreas and other mucus producing organs, such as the gallbladder, preventing enzymes from reaching the intestines to break down and digest food. There is no cure for CF yet, but, because of the money that has been raised so far, the average age of a person with CF went from 32 years to 36.8 in two years.
For every monetary contribution given, a signed paper sneaker was put on the walls at Curves of Fayetteville. The workout room shouted out, “Step by step, we are moving toward a cure!”

Along with everyone who is in some way touched by CF, Team Haley’s Curves’ Girls put their best foot forward on May 20 at the Great Strides Walk so that one day CF will stand for “Cure Found.”
