Cunningham has had plenty of experience with plants and horticulture. He grew up on a grain and livestock farm that covered 400 to 500 acres of land. The property that the garden center is on is actually part of the land that Cunningham and his family farmed. Being exposed to horticulture so early, he developed an interest in the field and went on to pursue a degree in horticulture.
Cunningham's business started out as a wholesale operation selling perennials and annuals, and in 1996 the business moved to retail, offering a full line of wooden ornamentals, perennials, herbs, annuals and garden accessories.
The roots of the original grain and livestock farm are still evident at Country Gardens today.
"We are a working farm," Cunningham said. "We have cattle and other animals for customers to see. Our display gardens and rustic farm atmosphere give customers a unique shopping experience."
The original barn used in the wholesale operation was converted to an indoor shopping area and display gardens outside feature a water wheel and water garden.
Customers will also find season displays as they enter the store. With the Christmas holidays just around the corner, Country Gardens will feature poinsettias, Frazier Fir trees, and beautiful fresh-made wreaths.
Country Gardens is committed to helping their customers get the most for their plants and gardens at home. Classes are offered throughout the season on a variety of informative topics.
The store's Web site, www.countrygardensfarm.com, is also very helpful, offering many resources to local growers. Here you can post a question and have it answered by the store's staff, see a list of products offered and their descriptions, and stay up to date on the latest specials and events, such as the different classes offered.
Country Gardens is a family-owned and operated business. Mike Cunningham and his wife Judy own the store, and one of their son's is following in his father's footsteps by currently pursuing a degree in horticulture. Several other family members have also joined the workforce at the garden center over the years.
