That is the simple essence
of our Memorial Day celebration; to remember, and to
honor those who have given their lives in the cause of
freedom. Many people told me after the event that
attending made them feel good. It was a cleansing, of
sorts.
One young woman holding a
small child was seen with tears flowing down her face
during the playing of Taps. Apparently, someone she loved
had made that ultimate sacrifice, and her tears helped
ease the pain.
Our guest of honor, General
Raymond G. Davis, and his wife, Knox, were impressed with
the turnout, and with the warm reception they received
during their stay here. He and Knox commented afterwards
that, for them, it was one of the most moving events and
warmest receptions they'd ever received.
Coming from people who are
asked to preside over many such events, those are high
praises. So for those who attended, thank you and be
proud, because you were part of something special. For
those who couldn't make it this year, I hope you'll join
us next year.
