Honoring
Jack Krakeel, Fayette's director of Fire and
Emergency Services, was the first order of
business at the Brooks Town Council meeting. He
was recently chosen national Fire Chief of the
Year by Fire Chief magazine.
He
was presented with a certificate of appreciation
as well as being given a Brooks commemorative
Coke bottle.
representative of the Peachtree City Limo
Services, Joe Cola, explained a park and ride
service the company will be instituting in
Peachtree City within the next year. A unit will
pick up every half hour at four different
stations in Peachtree City with runs to the
Atlanta Airport and return, Cola said. The
expected times will be from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Collis
Brown, Georgia Department of Natural Resources,
appealed to the council to participate in the
Natural Flood Insurance program. He explained
that there are 422 communities participating but
the Town of Brooks was not one of them.
"There
is no charge," he said, "but in the
case of floods or tornadoes, your residents could
not apply for special consideration for
loans." Grants also would be available to
the town for such items as warning sirens. The
council will take up the matter at its next
planning meeting.
The
millage rate was officially set at one mill.
Council
members discussed whether to set a special
election due to the fact that Post 4 Councilman
Jimmy Lindsay will not be seeking reelection.
Brooks citizen C. W. Howell had initially
qualified to run in the Nov. 2 election, but
after the qualifying closed, it was discovered
that he was a couple of weeks shy of living one
year in the town.
Consequently,
a special election will be conducted, probably at
the end of November.
It
is expected that Howell will qualify to run at
that time.
