Is it time
for the city of Newnan to build a convention center?
That's the
question a newly formed committee will attempt to answer
in the next few months, according to Main Street Newnan
director Mary Jo Holden.
Holden is
serving as liaison between the city and the committee and
said the committee is still working on the preliminary
concept for a convention center.
"There
hasn't been a site picked out or an architect hired. It's
still in the very preliminary stages," she said.
The
committee decided at its August meeting to get input from
the public on a convention center. During its Sept. 16
meeting, the committee will set a date on a public
hearing for October, Holden said.
Before
anything is decided, the committee will have to determine
how cost-effective a center would be and how much revenue
it would generate for the city, she added.
If the city
decides to build a facility, Coweta County could wind up
having two facilities that could serve as spaces for
large meeting.
The Coweta
County Board of Commissioners approved a new
multi-purpose building at the new fairgrounds facility on
Pine Road that will be up and running in the year 2000.
While not
specifically designated as a convention center, the
building will be able to accommodate small meetings and
other types of gatherings.
The meeting
on Newnan's convention center is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 16
at Newnan's City Hall.
