Sandy Creek had the dubious honor of opening the Fayette
Invitational Shoot-out. The Lady Patriots faced Mays in the
opening game at 9 a.m. and had their hands full. Mays had a quick
team and worked the ball endlessly on the perimeter, building a
28-20 lead at the half. Jessica Demooney did a fine job of controlling
the ball and pace for Sandy Creek but a number of errant passes
and poor shots helped Mays maintain a lead throughout most of
the game. Ashley Lott played very well in the post for
Sandy Creek.but was called on some questionable fouls. Mays
eventually won by a score of 47-41.
The Sandy Creek boys team then took the court to face
Mays. Mays was a preseason top 5 team in the state but played
inconsistently over the last few weeks. Sandy Creek came out firing
on all cylinders, building an 18-7 lead in the first quarter. Mays tied
the game in the second quarter after an 11-0 run and then led
Sandy Creek at the half by a score of 28-24. The Patriots never really
found their groove again. Mays went on a 13-2 run in the third quarter
and stopped the Patriots from setting up any kind of an offense.
The fourth quarter was more favorable for Sandy Creek as
both Bramlett and Lockett hit three pointers but it was too little,
too late. Mays advanced into the winner's bracket by defeating
the Patriots by a score of 62-45.
In the late games on Monday, the Fayette County Lady
Tigers defeated Statesboro, 44-41 and the Fayette County boys
beat Eagle's Landing, 73-43. The girls face Eagle's Landing on
Tuesday night and the boys will square off against Westside.
