About one-third of the golf cart owners in Peachtree City have been dragging their feet when it comes to applying for their new decal.
The deadline to re-register is Oct. 31, and as of late this week some 3,700 registrations were still outstanding, according to city staff.
The city estimates there are about 10,000 golf carts owned by city residents.
The city mailed out registration forms to all current cart owners in the city, but they also can be obtained at City Hall. The city also this year is offering an online registration process in which the decals will be mailed to the applicant’s home or business. Details about the online registration process are available at http://www.peachtree-city.org/index.aspx?NID=915.
Registration costs $12 in exchange for two white decals for either side of their cart, which are to be placed over the expiring yellow decals. The only caveat is that the resident registering a given cart must be current on their stormwater utility bill, city officials have said.
Residents who live outside of the city must be current on their annual $60 payment for use of the paths to qualify for the new $12 decal, officials said. Out-of-city residents cannot register online and must appear in person at City Hall to register.
The decals are good for five years per city ordinance.
The court fine for driving an unregistered golf cart is $90. Because the new decals are white and the older ones are yellow, it will be easy to tell who has a new decal and who lacks one.
The decal numbers are used by the city to locate the owner of an abandoned or stolen cart, a cart that’s been in an accident and also to track complaints from path users on a particular cart, officials have said.
GEM cars and other certified “low speed vehicles” approved for the cart path system do not need a golf cart decal because they must register at the Fayette County auto tag office.
