Unemployment still rising in Fayette, PTC

The effects of the recession are still being evidenced in Fayette County and Peachtree City. Fayette’s unemployment for December rose to over 8 percent while Peachtree City’s jobless rate rose to well over 7 percent.

December unemployment statistics from the Ga. Dept. of Labor showed a jump in Fayette County’s rate from 7.9 percent in November to 8.3 percent in December. In Peachtree City, the rate rose from 6.9 percent in November to 7.4 percent last month.

The breakdown for Fayette shows 6,813 people unemployed out of a workforce of 51,357 while in Peachtree City there are 1,215 people out of work in a workforce of 16,381.

The situation has changed significantly during the past year. The unemployment rate for Fayette in December was 8.3 percent compared to a rate of 6.3 percent in December 2008. Similarly in Peachtree City, the 5.4 percent rate in December 2008 was replaced with a rate of 7.4 percent in December 2009.

Things scarcely looked any better in the Atlanta Regional Commission area. The 9.8 percent unemployment rate for November inched higher to 9.9 percent in December. Those figures compare to a rate of 7.5 percent in December 2008.

And across Georgia, the seasonally adjusted rate of 10.1 percent in November increased to 10.3 percent in December. Those compare to a rate of 7.5 percent a year ago. Across the state in December there were 485,102 people out of work.
