As donation boxes become more ubiquitous, they are also “sticking out” a bit more.

And that is not a good thing to do in Peachtree City.

While the city is not about to disallow the charity collection points, officials are poised to regulate them more than is currently being done.

A proposed ordinance to do just that was approved by the city’s planning commission Monday night, and it will be considered by the city council at a future date.

The color and signage of some donation boxes has come to the point where the city is getting questions and complaints about some of them, Community Development Director David Rast said.

Another goal of the ordinance is to have a contact person for each donation box so the city will know how to reach someone if it falls into disrepair, Rast said.

The ordinance would require donation boxes to be registered for a $10 fee, so the city could keep the contact information updated on each location.

Also, the color of the boxes would be required to be of the low reflectance, neutral or earth tone variety, similar to the current requirement for other accessory buildings on property zoned residential or commercial, Rast said.

The size would also be regulated, with boxes no larger than eight feet tall and encompassing no more than 128 cubic feet.

Location is another matter, as they would be forbidden from being in the setback.

The new regulations would not apply to donation boxes which are attended or recycling receptacles, Rast said.

The commission voted unanimously to recommend approval of the ordinance. The final say rests with the city council.
