Summer baseball program in the works

If you want to go old-school on the baseball diamond and you’re a bit older than the average player, there is a unique opportunity coming to Coweta County this summer.

The county is sponsoring a 45-over baseball program that has one team right now but could have more if there is sufficient interest. Officials with the Coweta County Parks & Recreation Department are looking for teams in other areas as possible opponents.

“If other towns or counties are interested we would like them to play us,” said department spokesman Jim Johnson. “We would be glad to play a home-and-home format.

A similar league already exists in the metro area — the Atlanta Area Men’s Senior Baseball League, which plays Sunday games. Johnson said Coweta wants to do something similar but with Saturday games and without the drive to Atlanta.

“I have contacted Carroll County and Troup County and have received some interest and will be contacting Fayette County and Heard soon,” he said.

Players will use wood bats. Coweta County will provide the field, umpires and baseballs (also lights if needed). Teams will provide their own uniforms and other equipment.
