Mary Evelyn King, 8, who fought a second round of neuroblastoma cancer, died Friday at her Fayetteville home, surrounded by family.

A Celebration of Life service was held this morning at St. Elias Orthodox Church in Atlanta.

Mary Evelyn was a second grader at Peeples Elementary School and was profiled in the Sept. 8 edition of The Citizen.

The local community rallied around Mary Evelyn as she was diagnosed early this year with a relapse of the neuroblastoma, which had been in remission for four years. Friends and strangers joined to raise funds for a special trip to Disney World in Orlando for the family, and Mary Evelyn’s mother Edna has inspired other parents by sharing the family’s journey in an online blog.

Mary Evelyn is survived by her parents Edna and Mark King, brother Thomas King and a host of other relatives. Her obituary is posted at http://www.thecitizen.com/articles/10-10-2010/mary-evelyn-king-8-fayette….
