Fayetteville Police Chief Scott Pitts has resigned after serving as chief since 2013. Maj. Jeff McMullan will serve as interim chief.

Fayetteville City Manager Ray Gibson on Wednesday said Pitts resigned his position as chief effective Sept. 1.

Gibson said McMullan will serve as interim chief beginning Sept. 1 during the search to fill the position.

Pitts was hired at interim police chief in April 2013 with 21 years in law enforcement and was appointed to the position permanently in November 2013.

It was also in 2013 that McMullan assumed the permanent rank of major.
