Alligator sighting at Lake McIntosh

Signs alerting residents to be aware of the possible presence of alligators have been posted in the areas of Lake McIntosh and the Line Creek Nature Area in Peachtree City.

Fayette County 911 received a call June 27 at about 5:45 p.m. reporting a possible alligator sighting in Lake McIntosh, according to county officials.

The witness said he observed what was thought to be a log floating in the lake. The object then “attacked a duck and slapped the water with its tail.”

County marshals were dispatched and evacuated the lake, which remained closed until Tuesday morning when a more extensive search by the Marshal’s Office marine units and a representative of the Department of Natural Resources turned up no further sightings.

Signs alerting residents to the possible presence of alligators were posted by the county at Lake McIntosh dock area and at the Line Creek Nature Area.

Fayette County has been in contact with a state-certified trapper who will be conducting additional searches of the lake. At this time, the lake has been re-opened to boaters, but the Marshals Office request that all visitors remain alert and use an abundance of caution.

Lake McIntosh is a 650-acre Fayette County reservoir located on TDK Boulevard in Peachtree City.

As with all reservoirs in Fayette County, swimming or bodily contact with the water is strictly prohibited.
