Hauling activities of dredging material from Lake Peachtree will be confined to the nighttime hours to cut down on traffic delays on Ga. Highway 54.

Fayette County Clerk Floyd Jones on April 10 said the county has been contacted by citizens expressing concerns about safety issues on Hwy. 54 where dump trucks are hauling soil and plant debris from Lake Peachtree onto Hwy. 54 just west of the bridge.

“The concern is construction trucks halting traffic while waiting for an opportunity to merge into west bound traffic, lessening the time for vehicles to react when approaching the blocked highway,” Jones said.

Jones said Fayette County, Peachtree City and Massana Construction in a joint effort to mitigate traffic and safety concerns on Hwy. 54 at the truck entrance, have comprised a plan to remove the dirt after hours from 7 p.m. until the morning.

Two Peachtree City officers will coordinate the maneuvering of the construction trucks from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. and reduce to one officer after 11 p.m. on days where dirt will need to be moved, Jones said.

County Chairman Charles Oddo states, “Resident safety is a priority in any situation,” said Fayette County Commission Chairman Charles Oddo. “The timely response to this situation and the organization of a plan with Peachtree City to swiftly mitigate this safety concern is collaboration at its best.”

Responding to the county’s plan,Peachtree City Mayor Vanessa Fleisch said, “I’d like to thank Chairman Oddo and the Fayette County Commissioners for their willingness to look at options that will improve safety while keeping the project a priority.”

Jones said all involved in the Lake Peachtree dredging are moving forward to complete the project as quickly as possible. The project involves removing 64,000 cubic yards of debris from the area of Lake Peachtree immediately to the south of the Hwy. 54 bridge.

Barring inclement weather, plans call for the debris removal to be completed in June.
