County track & field stars stand out at state meet

Local athletes made their mark at the GHSA Track & Field State Championships.

Spread out over four days at the University of Georgia, county competitors piled up a lot of top 10 finishes over many events. Fayette County High’s Allen Israel Sulton IV was the lone local champion, winning the 800 meter run.

In Class 3A, Sandy Creek led the way.

The Patriot boys placed 3rd as a team.

They had three athletes finish high in multiple individual events. Tyson Penson placed 2nd in the pole vault and 3rd in the 300 meter hurdles. Alijah Ferrell finished 5th in the long jump and 7th in the triple jump. Avery Ramirez placed 3rd in the 800 meter run and 5th in the 400 meter dash.

Austin Nunez finished 4th in the 400 meter dash, Chris Webb finished 8th in the 800 meter run, Sun White placed 8th in the high jump, and Elijah Ware finished 10th in the discus throw. Their 4×400 meter relay team placed 3rd, their 4×100 meter relay team finished 5th, and their 4×800 meter relay team finished 5th.

The Lady Patriots finished 5th.

They had a pair who racked up multiple high finishes. McKenzie Paul placed 2nd in the triple jump and 4th in the 100 meter hurdles, and Camryn Bumgarner placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash and 4th in the long jump.

Erin Smith placed 2nd in the 100 meter hurdles, Ana Jones finished 4th in the 300 meter hurdles, Kenadi Day finished 7th in the 100 meter dash, and Winter Smith finished 10th in the 1600 meter run. Their 4×100 meter relay team placed 3rd, and their 4×800 meter relay team finished 4th.

The Fayette County High boys finished 6th.

Along with Sulton’s victory in the 800 meter run, Stylianos Kutob placed 2nd in the 400 meter dash, Christian Thomas finished 4th in the 110 meter hurdles, Jordan Pye finished 7th in the 400 meter dash, and Brayden Woodard finished 10th in the 3200 meter run. Both their 4×400 meter and 4×800 meter relay teams placed 2nd.

The Fayette County High girls finished 18th.

Gabbie Costner placed 3rd in the triple jump. Marzani Sconyers finished 5th in the 100 meter hurdles and 8th in the triple jump. Their 4×100 meter relay team finished 8th.

The Whitewater boys finished 15th.

Austin Chrouch placed 3rd in the 1600 meter run and 7th in the 800 meter run, David Duru placed 3rd in shot put, and Tyler Wendt finished 8th in the 1600 meter run. Their 4×400 meter relay team finished 6th.

The Whitewater girls finished 31st.

Jayla Fouse finished 8th in the 800 meter run, Zahriya Sullivan finished 8th in the 400 meter dash, Xyan Sinkfield finished 9th in the discus throw, and Aurora Collins finished 10th in the 3200 meter run. They placed 7th in the 4×400 meter relay and 9th in the 4×100 meter relay.

In Class 4A, Starr’s Mill strung together a number of strong performances. 

The boys finished 10th.

They had a pair finish high in multiple events. Jackson Underwood placed 3rd in the 1600 meter run and 6th in the 800 meter run. Nate Pacetti placed 3rd in the 3200 meter run and 9th in the 1600 meter run.

Jason Li finished 4th in the 800 meter run, and Chase Griswold finished 6th in the 3200 meter run. Their 4×400 meter relay team finished 9th.

The girls finished 18th.

Kendra Ivaska finished 4th in the 800 meter run, Chloe Tucker finished 6th in the 200 meter dash, Beatrix Cooper finished 8th in the 800 meter run, and Ana Miller finished 10th in the 800 meter run. Their 4×800 meter relay team placed 3rd, and their 4×400 meter relay finished 8th.

In Class 5A, McIntosh made a run at the podium in many events.

The boys finished 15th.

Mamadou Boube placed 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles, Tristan Campbell finished 7th in the high jump, Asher Allen finished 8th in the pole vault, and Cole Rueff finished 10th in the 3200 meter run. Their 4×400 meter relay team placed 3rd, and their 4×200 meter relay finished 5th.

The girls finished 28th.

Livie Rafter placed 3rd in the 3200 meter run and 6th in the 1600 meter run. Their 4×800 meter relay team finished 9th.
