Donut Dive Part 2: Finkles Bake Shop, a farmers market favorite

Last week, we did a donut deep-dive featuring HERO, Donut Worry, Heirloom Doughnuts, and Tim Horton’s. Tasting all of the donuts last weekend was a delicious mission, but there was one much-anticipated stop that we were not able to make: Finkles Bake Shop. Fortunately, we were able to circle back to them this weekend- and it was well worth the wait.

Finkles Bake Shop is a beloved staple of the Peachtree City and Senoia Farmers Markets on Saturday mornings, where it’s not uncommon to have the line stretch far beyond the booth. Known for their creative, small-batch gourmet donuts, Finkles also offers various baked goods like cookies, danishes, and other breads. They frequently sell out, but when they do have leftovers they are often given to local first responders.

Finkles closed on July 5 in observation of the Fourth of July holiday, but they were open again on July 12-just in time for us to taste test some of their fan favorites.

Upon arrival, we spoke with one of the friendly employees, who said their bestselling donuts were their Cinnaroll, S’mores, and Boston Cream. She also mentioned their danishes, chocolate chip cookies, and limited-time items to be popular, but for this mission we focused on the donuts.

We began with the Cinnaroll donut, a brioche-style donut base topped with a cinnamon sugar glaze and a smooth brown butter cream cheese icing. This donut was outstanding. The brioche dough was perfectly fluffy and moist, making it dangerously easy to keep reaching for more. The cinnamon sugar glaze added the right amount of sweetness without being overwhelming, and the icing was a standout- smooth, flavorful, and buttery. Overall, this donut was a 10/10 for me.

Next, we tried the S’mores donut. Built on the same brioche donut base, this one was topped with chocolate ganache, graham cracker crumbles, and a generous swirl of marshmallow fluff. While the base of the donut was just as excellent as the last, the chocolate ganache icing was slightly richer than my usual preference. That being said,  the graham cracker crumbles and marshmallow fluff help cut through some of that richness. The marshmallow fluff, in particular, had a light and airy consistency that truly mimicked the texture and taste of a roasted marshmallow. Overall, a 7.5/10 donut.

Lastly, we tasted the Boston Cream donut, which featured a smooth chocolate glaze and a vanilla cream filling. The chocolate glaze was well-balanced-not overly rich or sweet-but it was the filling that stole the show. Packed with a generous amount of fresh, creamy filling that had flecks of vanilla bean, it brought the whole donut together. This one came in at a 9/10.

If you haven’t yet stopped by the Senoia or Peachtree City Farmers Market to try Finkles Bake Shop, I highly recommend it. Had we tried Finkles last weekend, it would have taken first place. Whether you are looking to try a vast array of flavors or just a little treat, Finkles has the right amount of gourmet quality and charm to alleviate sweet-tooth cravings.
