I was pleased to read the comments of Mr. Judson Johnson and others in reaction to my comments on district voting. I am pleased because it shows that SOME Fayette County citizens are taking the matter seriously.
It is interesting that Mr. Johnson, Mr. Richardson and others who are opposed to district voting, always come back to race and the NAACP. They seem to be allied against the NAACP for whatever reasons. They forget that the NAACP is representing citizens of this county who just want “equal representation” in county matters, which is our constitutional right.
Mr. Johnson is right when he says he has one vote, just as everyone else. However, sometimes some people act as if they vote for everyone else. They tend to forget that people lost their lives to give everyone the right to vote. They act as if the Jim Crow south didn’t happen.
I ask that they do their own research. Maybe then they will get a good perspective of what “voting rights” are about.
As far as Judge Batten is concerned, his decision speaks for itself. Those who disagree with the decision should address their comments to Judge Batten. I believe he made the correct decision and it will be upheld in appeals court. The future will tell who is right on the issue of district voting.
As far as I’m concerned, there is no purpose in discussing the issue further with those who have decided that an at-large system serves them best. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, which I respect. So, thank you, Mr. Johnson for your comments.
