Fayette County deputies responded July 25 to a report of an altercation during which a man attempted to hold down a woman and rape her, according to an Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Deanthony Burton, 23, of Fayetteville was arrested and charged with false imprisonment, aggravated assault, and criminal attempt to commit rape. All are felonies. There was also a charge of cruelty to children because a minor was present.

Another July 25 altercation resulted in an arrest in the area of Hwy. 85 South and Royal Bridge Way. An FCSO spokesman stated that a man got into a physical fight with his boss and ultimately threw a brick through the back window of a Bobcat tractor, striking his boss in the back of the head.

Carlos Chavez-Roman, 47, of Atlanta was arrested and charged with felony counts of criminal damage to property in the first degree and aggravated assault.

Every week in Fayette County, a handful of people involved in routine traffic stops find themselves facing a variety of unrelated felony charges.

A driver gets pulled over solely because of excessive window tint or a tail light that doesn’t work. Then a law enforcement officer finds drugs and weapons in the car, which means the vehicle is staying put and the driver is leaving the scene in handcuffs.

This past week was no different, with at least two people taken to the Fayette County Jail for reasons that would likely never have become apparent had they been operating their respective vehicles properly.

According to a spokesman with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, a traffic stop was initiated July 20 at Hwy. 54 and McElroy Road because of a tag light that wasn’t working, making it difficult or impossible for the officer to see the license plate. Upon approaching the vehicle with the driver’s window down, the officer smelled marijuana.

A felony amount of the drug was found, along with a weapon. Carahi Sheffield, 25, of Fayetteville was arrested and charged with drug possession/sale/manufacture, possession of a firearm/knife in commission of a crime, and a tag light violation.

Over in Peachtree City, an officer conducted a July 26 traffic stop because of a vehicle impeding the flow of traffic. That driver was pulled over and found to be wanted out of Henry County. Neville Liverpool, 47, was arrested on that warrant as well as a revoked or suspended license and an open container violation along with the traffic charge, according to a police report.

Peachtree City police also reported a July 24 incident on City Circle during which Kemonte Sims, 26, of Atlanta was arrested and charged with theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, both felonies, as well as tampering with evidence. He also had a list of traffic charges including a seat belt violation, brake light/turn signal violation, and expired/no license plate/decal.

    • Sno – What are you talking about? The facts are presented here along with an accurate observation that careless drivers with outstanding warrants often imperil themselves with arrest by their own disregard of vehicular traffic laws. That observation doesn’t even require a mild leap in logic, and it certainly doesn’t represent an unsubstantiated opinion.

    • The only “observation” I saw in Mr. Roark’s reporting was “reasons that would likely never have become apparent had they been operating their respective vehicles properly”, which is not an opinion.
Please correct me if I am wrong and show me his opinion.
